Golden Scraps, a Variety Show slash cabaret produced by Erin Washington will sound off THIS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 4TH at Pete's Candy Store in Williamsburg. Featuring the talents of actors, poets, dancers, and yours truly, this is a once in a lifetime event that you don't want to miss!

According to Erin:

“Golden Scraps,” brings artists together to express, scream, laugh, and explore the golden in all of us and the trashy as well as. The light, the dark and all the grey in between.

Some of you know me, and some of you don't. My name is Timothy Prolific Jones, and I am the gentleman bestowed with the privilege and honor of managing SoSoon. We have shared a long, powerful 9 years together as group members, activists, performers, and brothers. In 2001, we co-founded a group called The Cataclysm, along with The MarXman, K-Mil, and Darkside (who is getting married this weekend).

Last week, I dusted off my fatigue on my day off from work, and took the LIRR (Strong Isle, stand up) into Manhattan to support Soon's performance at Hunter College. This particular gig was special to both of us, as our performance careers really began at Hunter. Soon has performed at there for over 9 years straight, and literally has Hunter College tatooed on his arm. While he has performed at Hunter for nearly a decade, he never took the stage at an alumnai function. The rooftop gathering was filled with some familiar faces, but mostly new ones. Being management, I flyered every soul on that rooftop, and enjoyed the food and liquor.

Enough talking. The video clips below explain why this show was so important, and give you a small taste of the live Soon experience. I just wish it wasn't so dark when he performed Blowing Money, took his shoe off, placed it on the table, and smacked it on the ground.

I just got off the phone with the next “SoSoon Woman of the Month,” miss Charlotte Mishell. And to be honest prior to our talk, I wouldn’t have needed a better reason to write about Charlotte beyond saying “She’s my number one Queens sister.” However, I learned that she and I share some very interesting common bonds. Would you like to hear it, well here it go……..

If you’ve ever read Superman comics or graphic novels, you may be familiar with a character by the name of Bizarro. He is in a word, Superman’s opposite. During our conversation, Charlotte and I realized that we are each others Bizarro versions of one another! Charlotte is to the New York City Hip-Hop scene what I am to the New York City Spoken Word scene; one of the few fairly respected in our “opposite crafts;” kind of a big deal considering you don’t see many emcees at Spoken Word venues and visa versa. If you’ve ever been to some of the more revered Hip-Hop venues in New York, you’ve likely seen the large personality that personality fits into the compact physical frame that is Charlotte. You’ve probably even seen her rock a Spoken Word piece in that same Hip-Hop dominated venue. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t say that Charlotte is well respected and appreciated in the Hip-Hop scene of New York.

On the converse, I remember earlier in my performance career when I would much rather be at Spoken Word venues over Hip-Hop venues. As a result I think it’s safe to say that I’ve garnered my fair share of respect within the New York City Spoken Word poetry scene.

Interestingly enough in both of our respective scenes, neither of us sit at the nerd table, but we’re definitely not sitting with the cool people either (think Bizarro!) Neither of us like competing; we’d much rather go to a space where it’s more about sharing our talents with other artists and fans alike. But put the battery in either one of our backs and we may do it. Individually we both put Queens on our backs when we’re on and off the scene (with all due respect to ALL Queens emcees and poets.) Here’s another for ya; ask either of us about the best moment ever in our respective lives and we’d both say our respective birthday parties, which were also CD releases featuring performances from our peers in and around the scene. But if all of this isn’t enough, Charlotte currently stands in the building where I once called my elementary school, in the capacity of an 8th grade teacher. What a bizarre world we live in!

The story of Charlotte’s life is in my opinion is even more interesting than the parallels between her and me. A five year old Charlotte used her creative talents to make a book for her mom. Birthday’s and Christmas’ were opportunities for Charlotte to custom make cards for her mom (mom would NEVER accept Hallmark.) Mom wanted Charlotte to be a writer, largely based off of her early realization of her daughters creativity. But young Charlotte couldn’t understand the concept of writing as a career.

Let’s go deeper; mom wanted to be a teacher. A Syracuse University bound Charlotte flirted with education as a major, but didn’t do so well and concluded “not for me.” The Syracuse University graduate Charlotte worked for some time in the broadcast communications, but quickly noticed the bills were not getting paid. She’s been teaching ever since. Bizarre? Charlotte’s take on the matter; “Everything that's supposed to happen always does, no matter how much you try to screw it up."

Adult Charlotte has bigger aspirations though. She doesn’t like working in a system where she and her peers are being used as tools to manufacture complacent human robots, which are provided with just enough education to eventually mold them into worker bees for our hive of a society. It’s to the point where she rendered herself jealous when one of her closest colleagues recently quit.

Charlotte’s role in this artistic realm we live in is to go against the grain. She refuses to accept the barriers that many Hip-Hop and Spoken Word artists choose to embrace, be it proactively or inadvertently. The self proclaimed “Daughter of Hip-Hop” is working on a video. Books are not quite her forte. Her 1st project being the release of the “Love, Charlotte” CD is concrete evidence of aforementioned endeavors. According to Charlotte, “CM (Charlotte Mishell) is not an emcee.” But if you ask me, she does a good job riding the fine line between Spoken Word Poet and Hip-Hop artist. That’s why Charlotte is a SoSoon Woman of the month.

My original desire to interview Knickie D was because of her very "real" personality, and what seemed to be an innate ability to speak whatever's on her mind. While my assumption about her "real" was quite accurate, it turns out that Knickie is quite an introvert. It was not until four years ago when she started performing at her Alma Matte Buffalo State University that she began to break out of her shell. The admitted nerd, who has been writing since 6 years of age hadn't yet discovered her performance voice, let alone be in the company of those whom she later realized, desperately wanted to hear her because of her "real" perspective. With the latter assumption proven to be wrong, I asked Knickie why is it that so many people think you speak your mind, to which Knickie replied "I'm just blunt,"which often can be mistaken as being rude. Knickie the person is shy (so she says). She lives by the old credo "don't ask, don't tell." But dare you be bold enough to ask, and you will understand why she's so often mistaken for a rude bitch!

Knickie D the poet is not afraid to show her vulnerable side. If she needs to be loved, she's not afraid to express it. If she doesn't like you or your pathetic excuse for poetry, she'll express it (artisticlly). On the other hand, if she loves your work, she'll be your cheerleader to the end (It wasn't until interviewing her that I found out I was her favorite underground emcee!) But in true West Indian form, Knickie will tell you off if she doesn't agree with you.....just read the rant at the end of her 1st poetry book "The Not-So-Hostile-Take-Over" where she dedicates the entire last page of her book to talking about how she will not "fix her face" just because YOU think her disposition suggests she has a problem.

Knickie like many artist is a conundrum. But what separates her from any other woman that I PERSONALLY could speak about is the reality of the situations she's gone through in her 20 plus years; the lack of understanding and support from her family with regards to her multi artistic abilities (she's a poet, a short story writer, and an illustrator amongst other things). She used to be a cutter. She just recently overcame a near death experience. Somehow Knickie always overcomes. If you ask her, it is through the power of therapeutic poetry that she was, and still is able to understand her value to the world around her. This understanding has allowed her to not only give of herself through sharing her personal experiences, but she's now able to balance that with a stark perception of the world around her.

So why did I choose Knickie D to be the 1st woman I honored for woman's month? There's something about her pain and perseverance that is inspiring not only to women, but to me amongst other men. Not to mention, I like understanding misunderstood people! Knickie is a "weirdo," Which is something she honors. But if I've learned anything, the more weird the individual, the better the quality of their life's work (usually). And I can personally say that Knickie has Just begun to realize her potential.
